Case Study
ChatGPT
Adding New Features
Adding search, folder creation, and export features
*Disclaimer: This project was a conceptual endeavor and is not associated with OpenAI in any way.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The goal of this conceptual project was to incorporate additional functionalities into ChatGPT.
PROBLEM EXPLORATION
The existing ChatGPT interface lacks essential organization features limiting the user's ability to efficiently organize, retrieve, and share conversation data.
RESEARCH
I will dig into what users preferences are when it comes to organization systems and come up with one that works best for them.
Objectives:
How do frequent ChatGPT users currently organize their chats?
Which organization methods do users prefer (I.e. folders, tags, labels, etc.)
How do users search for old conversations?
What do users do with the responses they get from ChatGPT?
Methods:
Competitor analysis
User interviews
COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
I’ve analyzed 3 other AI large language based model resources including Google’s Bard AI, Chatsonic, and YouChat. Because these applications are all relatively new, some of the basic features I’ve mentioned are not currently available.

PROBLEM DEFINITION
Designing a seamless process to search history, create folders, and export responses is imperative to enhancing the overall ChatGPT user experience.

DESIGN: LOW-FIDELITY + HIGH-FIDELITY WIREFRAMES
LOW FIDELITY WIREFRAMES
At first, my inspiration for designing these functions drew heavily from the configuration of Google Drive, especially when it came to the folder creation function.
HIGH FIDELITY WIREFRAMES
Using the Figma community, I was able to find a version of ChatGPT’s design system created by contributor, Luminary 2.
USER TESTING FEEDBACK PART 1
The feedback received after conducting the first usability testing of my high fidelity prototype was sufficiently critical to justify the need for a redesign.
The design approach I took behind this was a play off of Google Drive. However, Google Drive is not a chat platform. That’s where it clicked for me...
From here, I sort of went back to the drawing board to see how much I could redesign within the next 2 days before my next scheduled group of testing took place.
DESIGN: HIGH-FIDELITY WIREFRAMES V2
USER TESTING FEEDBACK
Testers had a 95% average pass rate

REFLECTION
This project provided an excellent chance to build upon an established platform. I deliberately selected a product in the AI field due to its groundbreaking potential in both the current and future landscapes. While my primary focus revolved around the UI functionality of this AI platform rather than its engineering aspects, it offered valuable insight into the mindset of a UX designer when designing for such an intelligent tool.
